The primary objective of this course was to empower you to make informed decisions about the way you resolve parenting issues after separation, considering the best interests of your children.

• We started with an overview of the legal issues related to parenting after separation.
• Then we looked at the experience of separation for adults and the importance of dealing with your own feelings so that you can better deal with your children and what they are experiencing.
• Next we discussed the experience of separation for your children and how you can best help them through the process. We saw that how parents deal with the separation process affects the children’s behaviour and their transition to the new family structure.
• Finally, we examined the new parental relationship: how to develop a new businesslike relationship with your former partner and how to negotiate items of concern.

Moving forward, there are a few of simple things that you can do to help you make decisions that put the interests of the children first.

• Make an appointment with a family justice counsellor or use other services that may help you through your separation or divorce.
• Use the PAS Handbook for Parents.  You may want to print it, if you have not done so already. The PAS Handbooks is a detailed source of information about the topics we have covered. You can use it as a reference when things come up in your relationship with your children and your former partner. You have already tried some of the activities at the end of each chapter. These provided you with an opportunity for self-reflection and will help you plan your next steps.
• Use this website as an online resource to help you through the separation process. You can review any part of the course at any time and have quick access to resources. In addition, your children may benefit from going through other parts of the Families Change website.

If you registered for this course, you can now take the final exam. A passing grade is 70%.
